About Charmouth

Charmouth is built on a steep hill which slopes down to a sand ans shingle beach. It is sheltered by high cliffs which became a famous hunting ground for fossil collectors (be very careful if you venture near the cliffs because of recent cliff falls) after the first complete Ichyosaurus fossil was found by a lodal girl in 1811. The area is now part of an extensive nature reserve and is well worth a visit if you enjoy looking for fossils and want to learn more about the geology of the Jurassic Coastline.
